NAIDOC Week at the OGCYP: Keep the Fire Burning!

In 2024, the NAIDOC theme “Blak, Loud and Proud” celebrates the unyielding spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities – and invites us all to honour the legacies, continue to stand in solidarity and amplify the voices of First Nations people for the future.

Message from the Guardian: Reconciliation in 2024

As we move from National Sorry Day into Reconciliation Week, now is the time to call out the ongoing impacts of the stolen generations and the racially discriminatory child removal practices we still see today. Whilst the work of many in driving progress does not go unnoticed, the harsh reality is that generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are still removed from their family and culture, more so than ever before.

For National Volunteer Week – let’s say thanks to the kids!

National Volunteer Week happens each year, as an opportunity to recognise the diverse passions and talents that each person brings to volunteering.

This years’ theme for National Volunteer Week – ‘Something for Everyone’ – is an invitation to explore the myriad of opportunities available, emphasising that there’s a place for everyone in the world of volunteering!

Out and about with the Guardian this week

The Guardian, Shona Reid, and her team have been very busy over the last week, connecting to community and participating in some big events across the nation and especially here in Adelaide. Our offices participation is really important in ensuring the voices of children and young people we advocate for are front and centre in the wider community.

Have your say on a Human Rights Act for South Australia!

You may have heard talk recently about the possibility of a Human Rights Act in South Australia. Late last year, a parliamentary inquiry on this issue was announced – exactly one year after a group of more than 150 organisations and individuals endorsed a statement calling for the inquiry.
To help breakdown what a Human Rights Act could mean for children and young people, we’ve put together some information about the inquiry, as well as some common questions that come up when talking about rights.

Supporting young people through the holidays

With Christmas fast approaching, and another year coming to a close, many of us at the Guardian’s office are looking forward to a break, spending time with friends and family, and our festive season traditions. But it’s also important to take time to acknowledge that, for many of the young people we work with, this time of year can bring up complex emotions – and they need us to treat them gently and with understanding.
