Rights in detention
Late last week, I was at the joint national child protection and youth justice forums in Brisbane, and I was asked to sit on a panel to talk about youth detention centres – particularly around upholding children’s rights, and what that looks like in youth detention settings.
This week, I share a little of what I had to say.
National Child Protection Week 2024
Here we are, midway through National Child Protection Week, one of the busiest weeks in the calendar for our office!
Read on to find out more what the Guardian is getting up to, and how we are living this year’s theme ‘every conversation matters’.
This Friday the Office of the Guardian will be wearing it purple!
In this week’s blog post, we’re celebrating the importance of Wear it Purple Day! We explore some of the background to this day, and this year’s theme ‘Your Passion, Your Pride’.
We will also share some of our observations about how being in care and detention can impact LGBTQIA+ young peoples’ expression of their identity. Draft Children and Young People (Safety and Support) Bill 2024 out for consultation
Late last week, the Government released the draft Children and Young People (Safety and Support Bill) 2024 for public consultation.
Now that the draft Bill has been released, we’ve started to unpack what has changed and how this will impact – and attempt to benefit – the quality of care for children and young people, and ensure their fundamental rights are upheld and advanced.
Disability Royal Commission – federal and state governments release lacklustre responses
On 31 July 2024 both the Australian and South Australian Governments released responses to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability.
Unfortunately, only a mere 13 of the 222 recommendations have been fully accepted, and some of the key recommendations relating to supporting children and young people with disability have been overlooked.
Celebrating Aboriginal Children’s Day – Strong in Culture, Stronger Together
Yesterday, August 4, was National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day.
This year’s theme is ‘Strong in Culture, Stronger Together.’ This theme elevates the intention of this day, focusing on the strength of children that comes from their connection to culture and mob!
