The Guardian for Children and Young People invites submissions for the SILS inquiry so that it is is informed by lived experience, practice insight, evidence, sector and community knowledge.
Submissions can be made by:
young people with experience of SILS
families and carers
service providers
government and non-government agencies
advocates, peak bodies, and community organisations
Aboriginal organisations
academics, practitioners, and others with relevant expertise

Questions to guide your Submission
- What circumstances and decision-making processes lead to young people being placed in SILS?
- To what extent are young people involved in decisions about entering SILS?
- Are young people adequately prepared for entry into SILS and for the transition to independent living?
- Is SILS an appropriate placement model for the young people currently entering it?
- What are young people’s experiences of safety, stability, support, and wellbeing in SILS?
- Are the supports provided through SILS sufficient and appropriate, including in relation to education,
employment, health, mental health, disability, culture, and daily living? - What outcomes do young people experience after leaving SILS?
- Are current departmental oversight, monitoring, and accountability arrangements effective?
- What changes would improve the experiences and outcomes of young people in SILS?
Submissions will inform the Inquiry’s analysis and the development of findings and recommendations.
