At 30 June 2012, 2,544 children and young people were in the custody and guardianship of the Minister for Education and Child Development under 12 month or guardianship to 18 years orders. An additional 40 were on Investigation and Assessment Orders. (1)

Placement stability
In their passage through the care system, children will generally change placement a number of times. Of the 2,546 children and young people in alternative care at 30 June 2012, their experiences were:

Six to ten – 19.2%
More than ten – 13.5%
The number of children and young people in the care of the Minister has grown from 1,791 at 30 June 2007 to 2455 at 30 June 2012.
Young people in Youth Training Centres
In 2011-12, 602 young people were resident at some time in the year in the Magill and Cavan Youth Training Centres. They ranged in age from 10 to 20 years. Of these, 15.3% were under the guardianship of the Minister. The average number of young people resident each day were for Magill 32.70 and for Cavan 32.76.
